We believe that the Board of Trustees, by abrogating its duty to the campus community in deference to the Statehouse on multiple occasions, has ceased to represent the interests of the campus community and has consequently forfeited its legitimacy. Therefore, we reject, wholly and completely, the legitimacy of Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell’s Presidency, and we reject the legitimacy of the Board of Trustees as the College’s governing body.
We call on the Board of Trustees to withdraw their offer of employment to Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell. We advocate for a fundamental change in the composition and structure of the Board of Trustees, including a tangible and substantive role for the student body in the governance of the College of Charleston. And we demand safeguards to prevent the Statehouse from any and all future influence in the governance and over the governing body of the College of Charleston.
